Why I fell in love with my eReader

imageedit_7_4172480836Oh, my beloved Ereader.. Will you be my Valentine this year?

I have always been a booklover. When I was a child I spent hours and hours in the local library. The librarians knew me and recommend me some of my all time favorite books. It was my happy place, and books were a way to escape.

I love to read, to dive into other worlds and to get to know new characters. But beside the story, I also love the feel of a book. The sturdiness of a hardcover, the look of a well-loved paperback, the smell of them.. And they look sexy on my shelf. Oh yeah, books are my jam.

I swore to never buy an eReader. It felt like betrayal to my lovely books. But last week I had a conversation on Twitter that (on a whim) made me order an eReader. So I did. And I love it.

Here’s why:

  1. It’s much more compact In so many ways. I cross the Atlantic Ocean pretty regularly, and I always take three or four books with me. Sometimes I even buy a book, read it and then leave it wherever I am because I don’t have the space in my suitcase to take it back home. I also spend about two hours a day on a train, and it feels pretty great to be able to take an entire bookcase with me.
  2. It doesn’t strain my eyes. I’ve tried to read a book on my iPhone before, but it always annoyed the living shit out of me. The screen is always a little too bright and a little too small, and I usually start missing the feeling of holding a book about halfway through. My eReader is bigger (yet only slightly heavier than my phone) and has an e-ink screen with optional light. Much much better.
  3. It’s cost-effective. Books are expensive, a least for me. And although I want to buy all the books in the world I don’t have the money for it. eBooks are usually way cheaper than physical books and go on sale a lot. Plus, there are billions of eBooks for free on the internet as well.

I could probably go on for days.

As long as you keep reading, I don’t think it should matter how you read. Books come in many different formats an everyone should be free to enjoy them the way they prefer. I will keep buying and reading physical books, because I still love them and always will, but not to the same extend as I used to. And I like it that way.

    • That’s awesome! I love how I don’t have to use a light when I read in bed now and it actually helps me to fall asleep faster as well. 🙂
